Be proactive, and not the face wash.

The best thing you can do for your career as an artist is to be proactive. What do we mean by proactive you might ask. How can it help? What are good ways to be active when it’s a slow time? Well here are a few tips to help you.

1. NEVER (I mean never) expect anything to be handed to you. The sooner you come to terms with the fact that your best friends sisters brother in law who has a friend that works for this record label is going to hook you up, is bullshit,  the better, faster, and smoother your career will go.

Nobody gets anywhere with out hard work. (If you are reading this, hopefully you already know that.)

Here is a great tip for you: The less money a record label has to spend on you, the more money in your pocket. Don’t wait for that record label to buy a tour van, don’t wait for that big advance to get good gear. That’s all money that you will have to pay back eventually.

2. Work when there is no work to be done. It will happen. No shows to be played. No myspace messages to respond to. No new songs to be written. Just because it may seem that there is nothing to do but wait, doesn’t mean that that is the case. Use downtime to your advantage. Practice. Practice stuff you wouldn’t usually practice. (acoustic guitars and vocals is great for tightening your guitars.) Get ideas down for new merch. That’s your money maker. Evaluate your goals. Start planning for the long road ahead. If you don’t have any idea what you’re going to be doing 4 to 5 months from now, you need to set goals for your self.

3. Network, Network, Network. My dad  used to always tell me, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. The same holds true in the music industry. It doesn’t matter if you wrote the next Thriller. If nobody knows who you are, you don’t mean a thing. Get to know your local music promoters. Hang out with other artists in your area. Go to shows and meet touring bands. Hit the streets and make friends and fans by passing out flyers, demos, stickers, posters. whatever. People love free shit. It’s even better when someone takes the time to strike up a conversation about it. Don’t rely solely on internet marketing. While the internet is a valuable tool for any artist, Face time is what will set you apart from everyone else.

Hopefully this will give you some ideas on what you can do to help push your career forward, even when things seem to be at a stand still. Be doing something everyday. It will help out in the long run.
